Not Up to Snuff

As a Francophile and home cook enthusiast, my appreciation of Le Creuset cast iron, enamel-coated casserole cookware and is very high (BTW, I have a gas stovetop and oven and have been using them since purchased 4 months ago).However, my enthusiasm for the brand name has been tarnished by the purchase of this low quality set (Le Creuset Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Cookware Set, 10-piece). Basically, this line is made in China (not France as the cast iron, enamel-coated pots are) and the result is not what I expected from such a quality-focussed company. I don't know how to describe the steel other than poor quality in the sense that:1. they scratch easily (even in shipping there were a few cosmetic scratches);2. the steel discolors easily and in splotches (small brown discolorations that only come off with a mild abrasive like Bar Keeper's Friend) on bottom AND sides;3. the frypan had a pit on the inside of it (the size of a grain of salt) that I did not notice right away since it was the last one I used of the set (had I seen it first I would have returned the whole set);4. the lid and support handles (not the actual longer handles) have the words "Le Creuset" stamped into every one of them and get easily marked (although they are a good width and good for large hands).To compare, I have a Calphalon stainless frypan (also made in China) and an inherited All-Clad 14-inch frypan (made in US), and the steel just seems to "feel" and perform differently. I am no metallurgist, but the steel used in these Le Creuset pots and pans just doesn't seem the same. Essentially, my disappointment with these pots and pans is mostly aesthetic, but it colors my overall satisfaction.The items themselves are heavy (which is good for heat retention), the lids seal well, and the lips really are no-drip. For some odd reason, the user guide says not to place them in an oven hotter than 300F (or some such ridiculously low temp), which seems kind of silly given that these items are all metal. There are volume markings on the inside of the larger pots and logos on the bottom of each one that will wear off over time, since it is some cheapo chemical printing - the markings look great in the product photos but wouldn't last very long, especially since I use Bar Keeper's Friend on them almost after every use (otherwise a weird "shimmering gasoline" effect will appear on the interior surfaces).PROSLarge lid and side handlesAll metalGood heat retentionNo-drip lip really worksHeavy (with tri-ply this is to be expected -- my wife does not care for how heavy the pots get when full of liquid)CONSScratch easilyDiscolor easilyLow Quality steelExpensive - you are paying for brand name onlyWRAP-UPIf you are looking for the tried-and-true Le Creuset quality you get from their cast iron, enamel-coated cookware, save your money and get a true high-quality item like All Clad, or go for something more reasonably priced (say $300-$400 for a 10-piece set) like Tramontina and not worry about longevity.
